Motto: "Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God"
"Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God." In 1776, this was
Benjamin Franklin's proposal for the Seal of the United States.  
Franklin proposed a Biblical depiction and introduced the motto:
"Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."  Jefferson liked it so
much that he used it on his personal seal, found at left.
